The Park and gardens comprise many rare and exotic plants and trees creating a Botanic Garden, an Arboretum but artistically designed, the brainchild of one man, created with a sense of fun, providing interest and
excitement for old and young alike.

IT’S ALL TOO BEAUTIFUL

This is Sakura, it means Cherry Blossom. Seventy Japanese flowering Cherry Trees, of seven different varieties, hug these three sacred hills, an homage to the Three Mountains of Dewa 出羽三山, Dewa Sanzan.

Haguro-san, Gas-san and Yudono are clustered tightly together. Holy to the Japanese Shinto religion and especially the mountain ascetic cult of Shugendo, Dewa Sanzan is a popular pilgrimage site.

Haguro, though the smallest of the three mountains, is the gateway to the others and must be passed through. It represents life, one’s present life. It leads, inevitably, to Gassan, representing death, the tallest of the three, before passing on to
Yudono which is viewed as being the heart of the three sacred mountains and considered the most holy. It represents
the After Life and, frankly, could not have been more aptly named, even in a different language to ours.
To traverse gently up and over these three, to experience its hills and valleys, is a journey
we must all take, a pilgrimage if you will.

UNDER DREAMING SPIRES

The Royal Mile, Windsor Long Walk inspired, is an avenue of Quercus robur fastigiata koster or, to put it another way, English Oaks that grow in the fastigiate form. First discovered growing wild in a forest in Germany it was propagated by grafting in 1783.

Planting exactly six meters apart in the row, ensures that when fully grown to some sixty feet tall and up to
eighteen feet wide at the base, each of the twenty-two trees will remain separate and distinct.

Illustrating the versatility of Ichi-Coo, a land that can be different things to different people. Transported back from the 21st Century, through the 1960’s here it is all the way back to Georgian times.
